How are we different ?

We have different races in our country ... Singapore is a cosmopolitan society where people live harmoniously and interaction among different races are commonly seen. The pattern of Singapore stems from the inherent cultural diversity of the island. The immigrants of the past have given the place a mixture of Malay, Chinese, Indian, and European influences, all of which have intermingled.Singaporeans do think of themselves as Singaporeans, regardless of race or culture. Each still bears its own unique character . Each racial group has its own distinctive religion and there are colorful festivals of special significance all year round. Although the festivals are special to certain races, it is nonetheless enjoyed by all unique character.Most Singaporeans also celebrate the major festivals associated with their respective religions. The variety of religions is a direct reflection of the diversity of races living there. Besides , we do also celebrates racial harmony day to gather all the different races together ... in addition , cultural night is organised in some school too to let the different races to communicate and watch different religious performance for a better understanding of their culture . This day was an important day to us , without it we will now still have race riot and will not have peace .
Different belief ... The Chinese are predominantly followers of Buddhism, Taoism, Shenism, Christians, Catholics and some considered as 'free-thinkers' (Those who do not belong to any religion). Malays have the Muslims and Indians are Hindus. There is a sizeable number of Muslims and Sikhs in the Indian population.The four official languages of Singapore are Mandarin, Malay, Tamil and English. English is the most common language used and is the language which unites the different ethnic groups. Children are taught in English at school but also learn their mother tongue to make sure they don't lose contact with their traditions.Singapore English usually come from other languages spoken in Singapore, especially Malay and Hokkien. Speakers of Singlish are not necessarily aware of which language they are from however.Here are some of the example:

~cheem - difficult, complicated
~ang mo - a white person
~liao - finished, the end
~kiasu - afraid to lose mentality
Speakers of Singlish will usually end his sentence with a distinctive exclamation. The three most common are ah, lah, ley and what.This is what makes us different =)

The 1964 Race Riots were a series of riots that took place in Singapore during two separate periods in July and September between Chinese and Malay groups. The first incident occurred on 21 july during a Malay procession that marked Muhammad's birthday. The riots are also known as the Prophet Muhammad Birthday Riots, 1964 Racial Riots, and 1964 Sino-Malay Riots. At that time, Singapore was a state in the Federation of Malaysia.All these had happened due to disobeying rules and racists. Having Singapore in a state of chaos , curfews were out to prevent more race riots from happening as well as to stop more tradegys and many death of the innocents.

What were the causes of the race riots?

Different kinds of reasons have been cited for causing the riots .. but to me , i feel that it was all due to lack of understanding among the racial groups that create the suspicion and unhappiness among the people . With all the misunderstandings among them ... leading to the riots contributed to the flight of the middle class out of the city into the suburbs. The lack of a strong middle-class and the high concentration of poverty in the city continues to plague it economically and socially. The area is plagued with drugs and prostitution, with a high homicide incident rateriots . In my point of view ,differences in religious beliefs and practices are also issues that can be used to create tension among the people in Singapore . Besides , misunderstanding occurs in the sitation too ... Also, the irresponsible media reporting and a trigger like the issue of race can cause suspicion , distrust , and even hostility among Singaporeans too.

What happened during the 1964 race riots in Singapore?

On 21 July, 1964, about 25,000 Malays gathered at Padang, Singapore to celebrate the Prophet Muhammad's birthday. After the speeches, the procession went on to Geylang. Along the way, a group that was dispersed was asked to rejoin the procession by a policeman. Instead of obeying the orders, the group attacked the policeman. This incident led to a race riot after the group of Malays attacked Chinese passers-by and spectators. A curfew was declared restore order, some people were killed while alot were injured . The next day , the race riot started again , people were only allow to buy foods in a short period of time . In total , more than 30 people got killed and more than 500 people got injured . (1) to enforce their policy of Confrontation with the newly-formed Federation of Malaysia, a number of Indonesian activists had infiltrated into Singapore in attempts to arouse the religious fervour of the more fanatical Malays;

(2) Chinese Secret Society gangs seized the opportunity to stir up violence;

(3) inflammatory reporting in the vernacular press helped to fan racial emotions.

After all the posts have been published,
all the understanding from the text.
we have conclude that in order to have peace
in the world,
first it has to be starts from the own country.
only when things get better in our own country,
then will the world do so..
Racial harmony is a very big and important event,
because during this day,
is the memory of the peace that the world will have,
if everyone respect one another's culture and religion.

For a country to gain harmony,
it has to be started right from the children.
They are the ones that carry on the standard the
country holds, they are the ones who will be able
to continue the peace that the country has.
To respect other races,
First, we have to know what are the reasons behind
each rule that they have to follow. And after knowing this,
rather than going against the rules, we should respect them
for example :
the malays are not suppose to have anything to do with pork,
this is what their religion says,
from a point of a chinese view,
to show respect, the chinese will have to try
their very best to keep away anything to do with porks,
whenever they are with the muslims.
Another example can be,
the buddists have their religion said that they are not allow
to have anything to do with beef,
so as the part of other religions,
to show respect,then don't have anything to do with beef
when the buddists are around.

If the country can be in peace,
living in harmony,
then things will be able to get along better,
smoother,agreeable.
when this happens,
the country will most probably excel in all kind of things,
as they fall they don't fall alone,
they won a victory,they celebrates together.
The spirit is that,the atmosphere is there,
this is how the country should be.

Moreover, this will definitely cause a great impact
for the country's reputation.
when more and more people in the world gets to know,
SINGAPORE as a little red dot,
achieve things that many other countries couldn't,
all we will get in return is the respect from other countries.
Tourists that came over here for their stay,
will defnitely feel the warmth within this country,
the spirit that they have,
the way they behave like a country.

This is how important racial harmony
might brings and cause in the country,nation or world.
Although the process might be tough,

Events that led to Maria Hertogh riot.

Maria Hertogh is a Dutch Catholic and was born on March 24, 1937. She was the third and yougest daughter among her five siblings. When World War II broke out, Imperial Japanese Army managed to capture he father, Adrianus Petrus Hertogh and was tortured in Japan til 1945. Since he was not able to take care of his family at that moment. Her wife, Adeline Hertogh and her five children had decided to stay with her mother, Nor Louise.

Mrs hertogh gave birth to her sixth child on December 29, 1942. Three days later, Maria went to stay with her grandmother's close friend, Aminah binte Mohammad. since then, Maria was given a Malay name Nadra binte Ma'arof.

After World War II, 1945, Mr Hertogh was free and reunited with his wife. Both of them could not track down where Maria and Aminah were. In September 1949, they were traced by the Red Cross Society, the Indonesian Repatriation Service, the Royal Netherlands Army and local police. They were at a village where they were living in.

Maria was married to a 22-year-old teacher in Bukit Panjang Government School, Mansoor Adabi. Nevertheless, Justice Brown said that the marriage was invalid. Under the Dutch law, the legal age for girls to get married is 16. Therefore, Maria was ordered by the court to be with her biological family.

The first Maria Hertogh riots began on December 11.

Causes of Maria Hertogh riot.

Mrs Hertogh's Point of View
Mrs Hertogh told the court that she was persuaded by her mother after she had given birth to her sixth child to allow Maria to stay with her mother's friend, Aminah, for a few days. When Maria had not returned after three to four days, she went to look for Maria by bicycle. But she counld not find both Maria and Aminah.

Aminah's Point of View
Aminah rejected Mrs Hertogh's point of view. She declared that she was given the permission by Mrs Hertogh herself to adopt Maria in the late 1942. Aminah told Mrs Hertogh that she could not able to produce an offspring and thus, she will regard Maria as her own and bring her up accrording to Muslim believes. According to Aminah, Mrs Hertogh replied to her that she would want to be brought up as a Muslim. Aminah left to Surabaya to look for a job and never saw Mrs Hertogh till 1950.

Mrs hertogh and Aminah's point of view differ from each other. This might be the causes of the riots. No one could justified which statement is true. Maria Hertogh case therefore depends on evidence. Another causes of this riots is due to the different and individual religious law and believes. When Maria was married, she was under the age of 16 years old. Muslim allowed girls to get married after puberty at that time. But Maria was still a Dutch Catholic. In fact she was only allowed to get married after she was 16. On December 11, the court hearing convinced the crowd which was mainly the Malay, Indonesian Muslim and Chinese, outside the supreme court that the colonial legal system was biased to Muslim. The riots then begun. Since then the Eurasians and the Muslims were not in a good terms at that time. Any Eurasians in sight will be attacked.

There were misunderstanding , disagreement and violence outbreak among the racial groups.The riots happened when suspicion ,unhappiness and mistrust between the races when they did not given equal treatment or did not share common identity.

The riots took about several months and it have already upset many muslims as they felt that the british legal system were unfair.both party did not want to give out maria hertogh and therefore lead to custody dispute.
it started on 11 december, the day for appeal hearing, but maria stayed at the convent and didi not attend.
preparation started when the muslims tried to gather their crowds outside the supreme court:
1) carry banners and flags with star and cresent symbols to represent themselves as lslamic
2) gather more and more people during noon
Later , those muslims were ot allowed to have gathering outside the court lead them to feel that the colonial legal system was biased against them.

RIOTS ERUPTED!!

how they attacked?
-the mob that have both muslim and chinese that were gathering outside the court started to attack any europeans and even eurasians in sight as maria hertogh's parents came from dutch.
-overturned cars and burnt them.
since the police force in lower ranks were ineffectively controlling the people from attacking one another. more and more people from other areas join in ther group to attack the europeans and the riots continued till nightfall.
the riots creases when british military was enlisted and various muslim leaders appealed over the radio.
BUT...the riots started again the next day.

There were like no laws and order among the rioters and they were like venting their anger on others without thinking of the consequences.

Consequences of riots.

Any Eurasians in sight were attacked by the groups of Malay, Indonesian Muslim annd Chinese for three days. The groups set up obstruction along major road, set fire on houses and cars and took controlled places like the mosques, Jalan Besar and many more. After two troops of Internal Security Battalian had came in, the riots had cease. But that does not mean that the riots had stopped forever. Riots still happened. These riots had cause the loss of lives of those innocents and those rioters who was killed by the policemen. Hundreds were injured. The Maria Hertogh riots brings chaos in Singapore.

Lessons Learnt

Everyone in this world has their own religion. We believes in our religion. We can prevent riots from happening due to religious issues by respecting one another's religion. We will cause unhappiness to someone if we disrespect that person's religion.

Having riots is just showing a protest. Riots will definitely not solve the problems arise. It will only make things complicated instead. Riots will cause many peeople to get killed and injured. We will not gain any benefit from riots but to loss our loved ones. Shops, houses, vehicles and streets are destroyed and damaged by fires, bombs and many more.

People are going to stay all day at homes because they are fear of going out. Riots will broke out aywhere and anytime. They will only risk their lives if they go out on their own. They are like living in fears.

Another riots that broke out due to religious issues was between the Protesters and the Catholics in the Nothern Ireland. Both of the parties did not belief in one another's religion law. End up, there is a gap (no communication) between the generation of the Protester and the Catholics within a few years.

We wll not benefit anything if we were biased or make fun of any religion.

Challenges that Singapore faces :
A generation of materialistic orientated policies of the incumbent People's Action Party government has resulted in certain social costs which Singaporeans now have to bear. This is the phenomenon of relative poverty identified as the 'new poor' in Singapore which has lead to an absence of bonds between people and a loss of ownership over the policy making process. It suggests initiating wide public consultation to find out what Singaporeans want and how they would like to rectify the problem.
